Sustainability Spotlight: John Gehman, MDiv ’25
Sustainability at Harvard's Schools and UnitsJohn Gehman is graduating from Harvard Divinity School in May 2025 with his Master of Divinity (MDiv) focusing on the intersection of religion and the environment. During his time at Harvard, John became involved in campus sustainability initiatives and programs, including the Office for Sustainability’s Council for Student Sustainability Leaders (CSSL). How are you involved in working with the Office for Sustainability?
“I first became involved with OFS when I first joined their Council for Student Sustainability Leaders back in 2022. From 2023 to 2025, I also received a student grants from the Office of Sustainability.”
What other sustainability-related experiences did you have on campus or beyond during your time at Harvard?
“I enjoyed a few experiences and courses, including: ‘Religion and Public Life: Letters to My Grandchildren’ panel; ‘Great Salt Lake’ course with HDS writer-in-residence Terry Tempest Williams; and when I had the opportunity to co-organize HDS Climate Justice Week.”
What is your best memory working in sustainability at Harvard?
“I think one of my most memorable moments at Harvard around sustainability was when I had the opportunity to travel to Iceland to work on religion and climate.”
What are your plans moving forward?
“After graduation, I am very excited to be joining the Teach for America program in Hawai’i.”
What advice would you give to incoming students related to sustainability and climate (e.g., classes to take, groups to join, etc.)?
“I recommend reading ‘Finding Beauty in a Broken World’ by Terry Tempest Williams.”
